Flew to Chicago to try the burger from Au Cheval and it was a 9/10!
For such a simple burger, it had so many flavors and they all worked so well together🤌🏼

There’s quite a few burgers in Chicago I’d put above it. If you can try little bad wolf, small bar, root stock, scofflaw, or table donkey and stick. All better than Au Cheval imo

I may be crazy on this, but their burger is just so much better without the bacon and egg. I think they take away from an otherwise excellent burger.
Next time you’re here check out leavitt street inn on Friday in early afternoon (I think it’s the the good chefs shift), along with gretel which might be my favorite all around restaurant in Chicago

I’ve driven hours probably just for that burger lol. Used to go to college at UIUC 2 hours away from Chicago. Every once in a while after a bad exam or when I needed a pick me up I’d go to small chevals.

Did you get the chopped liver? Holy shit the chopped liver! My wife is Jewish woman from NY and so she has eaten a lot of chopped liver in her life and she thought Au Cheval’s was the best she ever had. Granted she hasn’t been to a bunch of top Jewish delis/restaurants in NY but compared to some really good delis we thought it was fantastic.
Burger was obviously top flight too.
